We Were Here Tomorrow Not Working? Crashes, Voice Chat, Joining and Lost Checkpoints

Fixes to try first

Total Mayhem’s list of common solutions for We Were Here Tomorrow, which it says fixes most problems:

  • Check you meet the minimum requirements; integrated GPUs are not supported.
  • Switch roles in the lobby, or switch who hosts the game.
  • Verify the game files on Steam, run the game as administrator and set your Windows clock to the correct time zone.
  • Whitelist the game in your firewall and antivirus, turn off overlays, and close software that can interfere with the game or sound, such as controller drivers and network limiters.
  • Unplug USB devices you don’t need, install the game on an SSD, and update your graphics driver and Windows.

Crashing or a black screen on PC

  • Crashes at launch, in cutscenes or in play: the studio’s crash article suggests turning off VSync (in your GPU dashboard and in-game), using a dedicated and up-to-date graphics card, and trying DirectX 11 — either from the launch pop-up its recent games show or by adding -force-d3d11 to the Steam launch options. Remove the option again if it doesn’t help.
  • For stubborn crashes the same article adds a clean GPU driver install, resetting GPU overclocks, clearing the shader cache folders, and running sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth from an administrator Command Prompt, then restarting.
  • Infinite black loading screen, or the game closes right after launching: the black-screen article says to make sure a laptop uses its dedicated GPU, update drivers and DirectX, and install the Media Feature Pack on Windows N editions, which the game needs for video playback. That article also offers -force-d3d12 as a launch option that may help some older hardware — the opposite switch to the crash article, so try one at a time.
  • AMD cards: during the April demo, patch 0.9.1 added a DX11 Safe Mode launch option for AMD crashes and turned VSync off by default (demo history).

Can’t hear your partner: voice chat and walkie-talkies

  • Not a bug: when you stand close together you hear each other directly, and the walkie-talkies only appear on screen once you are out of hearing range.
  • On PC, set the right microphone as the Windows default (the studio recommends disabling other mics), then select the same microphone in the game’s audio settings, and raise the mic level in both places.
  • Don’t talk at the same time: like real walkie-talkies, you can’t hear each other when you speak or hold the button simultaneously.
  • Use “invite a friend” rather than “create a room”, unplug USB devices you don’t need, and unplug and replug your headset.
  • On console, check the privacy settings allow voice chat and that you haven’t blocked or muted your partner on the platform or in-game.
  • Routers and public networks (campus, library) can block the voice servers; the studio links the Photon and Vivox port lists for port forwarding. In some countries, including Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the voice servers are restricted: if “the connection to the voice server failed” appears, choose Cancel to keep playing and use a third-party voice app.
  • Known launch bug: audio input settings are not always saved when you leave the settings menu, so check your microphone choice again after restarting.

Can’t join your friend or find a room

  • Invite your partner directly from your friends list instead of searching for their room. Crossplay works across Steam, PS5 and Xbox (co-op rules); Total Mayhem has not published a separate guide for cross-platform invites.
  • On PC, make sure the firewall or Windows Defender is not blocking the game. On console, check the multiplayer settings are enabled and that you have the online subscription your platform requires.
  • An empty lobby list can just mean nobody is hosting; the studio suggests evenings and weekends, its Discord or the Steam forums to find a partner.
  • Disconnects: the studio recommends a stable, preferably wired connection, turning on UPnP on your router, and avoiding VPNs and public networks.

Lost progress, saves and checkpoints

The game saves automatically. Most puzzles have a checkpoint once you finish the whole puzzle and enter the next room, so stopping halfway through a puzzle can cost you that puzzle. If progress looks lost, the host reselects it:

  1. The host goes to the main menu and chooses “change” under your journey.
  2. Choose “Start New Journey”.
  3. Pick your last checkpoint from the list.

If the checkpoints can’t be clicked

Unclickable checkpoints usually mean the wrong player is hosting: swap hosts and try again. The studio says progress can be lost if the game is closed incorrectly or loses power or internet in the middle of a puzzle. The same reload is its fix for softlocks and game-breaking bugs.

Known launch bugs and their workarounds

From Total Mayhem’s known-issues list, updated on launch day; the studio says these will be fixed in an upcoming patch. Where the workaround is “reload the last checkpoint”, use the host steps above.

  • Crouching while shrunk can leave you unable to grow back: reload the last checkpoint.
  • Held items can vanish if you emote while placing an item into a slot: reload the last checkpoint.
  • With higher ping, a player can leave certain elevators before the doors lock, and jumping in moving elevators can cause problems: reload the last checkpoint.
  • In the “Corporate Espionage” checkpoint you can walk past a mission-critical item; progress stays blocked until it is collected.
  • Jumping onto certain plants in Chapter 6 can trap you in collision; it should respawn you, otherwise reload the last checkpoint.
  • Rarely, a gravity plate stops working in “The Magnetic Stabilize” checkpoint, or you bump into an invisible object in “The Gravitonics Department”.
  • Under rare circumstances an achievement in the “Routing Power” checkpoint is not awarded.
  • Climbing can be inconsistent but should never block progress: try another side of the platform or block. The same goes for a stack of Goop blocks you can’t climb from one side.
  • Some sounds and voice lines are too quiet, some lines lack subtitles, and subtitle timing can drift when the subtitle and spoken languages differ.

Reporting a new problem

The launch post asks players to check the support page and the known-issues list first, then report anything new through Total Mayhem’s website or its Discord server. The developer FAQ says the known-issues list is kept up to date there and in Discord. This page grows as the studio adds fixes and patches.
